Who is Gavin Stewart?

Gavin Stewart is a poet, new media artist, academic, arts administrator and creative writing workshop tutor who writes on an eclectic range of subjects. He is a biology graduate, a former derivatives trader and an avid traveller who draws inspiration from a variety of sources. His web-based work, ‘this little world’, tells the story of a 2,000 mile walk around England he undertook in the Summer 1996. He has also authored a work for the British Library: ‘Partnerships between Science and Industry’(ISBN 0-7123-0849-0), which was published in Autumn 1999. His last collection of poetry, Biology Lessons (ISBN 1 903031 008), won the 1999 Poetry Monthly booklet competition. His latest collection Sounding Out (ISBN 1 903031-03-6) was published by Poetry Monthly in Spring 2001. Gavin's short stories and poems have been published in a wide range of magazines including Smiths Knoll, Poetry Life, Poetry Monthly, The Red Wheelbarrow, The Interpreter's House & Rattapallax.

Gavin is currently working part-time as the Researcher in New Media Writing at RIMAD, University of Bedfordshire, UK. He was Artistic Project Manager for the trAce Online Writing School at Nottingham Trent University (2005-2006). He was also a Research Associate for the Narrative Laboratory for the Creative Industries based at DeMontfort University (2005-2006). His area of research is the addressivity of computer-mediated textuality. As part of his research Gavin has designed, programmed and written a number of web-based texts including choice/cuts & homecoming.

Gavin is the Poet-in-Residence at the Chiltern Study Centre, Ivinghoe. He was involved in the highly-successful 'People and Places' poetry project in February-June 2003 (a scheme that involved over 20 lower and middle schools in the Bedford area). His most recent work with children, Mystery Museum was created as part of Big Arts Week June 2005.
