This collection was originally published by Poetry Monthly as a prize for winning their 1999 Poetry Anthology Competition. The competition judge Neil Fulwood noted in his adjudication that

"[He] found in Gavin Stewart's poetry humanity, insight, experience, a wealth of subtle phraseology, a sense of nostalgia unsullied by sentimentality, and an almost heartbreaking use of understatement; in short, all the things to which true poetry should aspire."

Acknowledgments

'Biology Lesson', 'The Burner'and 'Pencilling-in Grief' were published originally in the Interpreter's House.

'Given to Arson' won the Bedfordshire Prize in the Bedfordshire Open Poetry Competition 1999.

'Hubris' was highly commended in the Cannon Poets Millennium Competition and was published in their anthology 'Broadside 2000'.

'Katherine' were produced and published as part of the Marston Vale Community Forest 1998 Arts Project 'Catching Light'.

'(for the man found frozen in the head of the glacier)' and 'PS' were originally published in the 1994 Bedfordshire County Council publication ' Bits of Me' - selections made by Simon Armitage.

'Revising Drafts' was published in 'Central England Inspirations 1999' - an anthology produced by Anchor Books

'Strategic Thinking' was published originally in Poetry Monthly

'Covert Operation' was published originally in Luton.Lit
