Pencilling-in
grief
As a practical couple
we know that we should mourn properly
that we should take time out
plan it on paper
clear loft of baby clothes
give away the old cot
throw out the lists of names
that have been pinned on the fridge for years
as a realistic couple
we know we should let go
that we should
go travelling
go crazy
go on with our lives
but as a childless couple
there is never the day for planning
never a right moment for lowering hope into the ground
instead we turn over
pages in a diary
appointed spaces
waiting to be filled
