Sounding Out

(pg.129 of the Times Concise Atlas of the World)

Chimborazo, Latacunga
Riobamba, Otavalo.

See how I love this loquaciousness,
this performing of names I do not know.
See the joy in my feel of Guayaquil
of Mangla Alto, of Esmeraldas.
I'm a child again, in the chaffering phase,
my mouth, my map of this approaching coast
(that snags and grabs at my tinkering tongue
and fashions shoals of sudden silver).

Jipijapa, Imbabura,
Antisana, Cotopaxi.

I'm free to chart my Ecuador
where everything's touched by a glint or glimmer
where everything's cloaked in my sound beliefs and
tongued to death by fellatio.
